The Paths of the Occult Nowadays II.

I’m going to return to a past post, The Paths of the Occult Nowadays, since I would like to talk a little more about the same topic. We talked about astrology, Feng Shui, symbols and some other things. Let’s go now to another topic: angels.

Angel, from the greek angelos, messenger. Angels are spiritual messengers. We usually call angels to all kind of spiritual beings acting between us and God, but the truth is that there is a whole hierarchy where “angels” are on the lowest site and, therefore, are the closest ones to us.

And let us say that angels are part of the jewish, christian and islamic traditions basically. Even though there are spiritual beings in other religions or traditions they don’t fall in the same description or category.

Angels are spiritual beings, therefore they don’t have a physical body, it is said that we see and represent them in a humanized form because that is the way we have of “understanding” them. According to our physical experience not all of us can understand or visualize an energy being, so our mind dresses him/her with atributes it can understand.

Angels have always been there, but suddenly a lot of “channels” began appearing everywhere and that’s where it is necessary to execute caution and analyze things.

A channel is someone who is capable of reaching a mental state high enough to perceive the messages dictated by an angel or archangel. Such messages usually have spiritual content, focus on the development of humanity or, some other times, deal with things to come. The person capable of making this kind of contact must have reached certain spiritual development, but the truth is that there are different kind of channels.

The ones who really are capable of making contact with angelic entities. The ones who have certain psychic capacities, who might believe they are contacting angels, but the truth is that they contact with spirits or entities who are not angelic, but have fun passing as them; some of these might be spirits more or less developed, but others might be mere human spirits who want to stick around the earthly plane and grasp to any chance of being taken into account.

There also are the ones who believe they are contacting spiritual entities, but are making contact with their innermost I, of course it will reveal you truths, but it is not an angel. And, finally, the ones whose one and great hability is to contact with their followers wallet. People who cheat with the only goal of making money.

How not to get lost in a world where there is no physical proof of what is said or felt? It’s not too hard. The first thing you must do is to observe how the person is, does he/she really acts as an advanced spirit? Being spiritually advanced doesn’t mean to dress up with oriental clothes and act like if you are in a continued state of meditation or trascendece. All of these might be part of an act prepared to attract the gullible. A developed being lives a quiet life, accepts people as they are, helps without shouting it to the world, needs no spotlights and shares what he knows. Can he/she be famous? They can, but they don’t need it.

Someone who, first of all, focuses in your wallet and in how much you can “donate” should make yourself ask if he really is what he says. Even though we are in slippery ground. There are honest people who earn life through esoterism and, so, they have to charge a price for their work, but one thing is to charge a decent price, maybe even symbolic, and a different one to try and get the most money from someone with different excuses.

Once you have analysed the person you might already have taken a decision, but if you still doubt, analyse the messages. Do they really talk about things that will help your spiritual development? Or do they focus on negative things? The messages tend to present the “channel” as “indispensable”?

It might not be easy to spot the truth, but false channels, sooner or later, always make big mistakes, as do false prophets, too.

Astrology and Marriage

They say love moves the world. What would life be without love? But love and marriage don’t always go together. Marriage is but a signed contract between two persons. In ancient times, especially among important families, it was quite common to set a marriage based on political, economic, or status motives. Even though the practice has decreased it hasn’t dissappeared at all. To tell the truth, many a marriage is based on money or status reasons. This is not necessarily wrong if nobody gets hurt.

History of the world is full with traditions, beliefs and superstitions regarding weadings, from the right date to get married to the proper way of celebrating them. There used to be difficult dates when nobody would dare to get married, but so were days (or years, in the case of the Chinese) when happy marriages were expected and everybody took advantage.

In Rome, May was a month consacrated to the ancestors, and they believed that spirits would mix themselves with the living. Because of this, since ancient times and until Middle Ages, it was forbidden to get married in May, to avoid marriage with a ghost or an enchanted woman from the Other World.

All you have to do is remember the stories of fairies, witches, mermaids and beings from “the other side” that get married with mortals, hiding their real personality or setting very specific terms for the marriage to last. We find them in many cultures. And when the real personality of the wife is found out or the terms of the marriage broken, she goes back to her world.

The first day of May is especially important, taking in account that, for celts and european people of old times, days began at sunset the 30th and ended at sunset the 1st. During the night, in northen and central Europa, the Walpurgis Night was celebrated. During this night the doors between our world and the world of spirits and faeries opened. But the 1st was also the time for Beltane, to welcome spring with rites that surely were related with fertility.

In our times, brides still try to fullfill a series of traditions to secure their happiness and the marriage of those still single. Something new, something borrowed, something used, something blue, throwing away their bouquet to women, and her garter to men…All of this to secure her happiness.

Can astrology help you to choose a good marriage? Yes, of course, if you are willing to listen.

If you can’t consult an astrologer to get a good date for your wedding, you can always say that the times or days ruled by Venus are, generally, romantic and good for marriage. This is, the signs of Taurus and Libra and Fridays are good times. So is Cancer, representing home, and familiy. And why not get married at noon? The Sun will be on the top of heaven, the 10th House of success, as high as we can get. My teacher used to wonder why people would choose a Saturday night to get married. Well, socially speaking, everybody will come to my wedding if I get married Saturday night, but it’s Saturn day, and during the night. Saturn is a slow planet, if it has difficult aspects it will affect the newly born couple for a very long time. If it is well aspected it will provide strong foundations to the marriage and might last for many years. Better a Friday, with the love of Venus or a Sunday, with the light of success and happiness coming from the Sun.

If you ask me, I don’t think these are good times for getting married on a Saturday, Saturn is squaring Pluto and opposing Venus and Mercury. Not a Go for me, even if we are in Taurus.

If you have the possibility of getting in touch with an astrologer then you have the option of taking a look at your sinastry. The astrological study called sinastry gives you an idea of how compatible you are with your partner. Sinastry not only applies for marriages, it can also be used for any kind of relationship, family, friendship, work, bussiness, love.

When you look at the natal charts of a couple you start analyzing their planets, giving greater importance to the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and Mercury, since these ones will tell us how each one sees life, how they feel, how they love, how they communicate and how they perceive sex, it also tells us about how they see money and the way they interact socially. You also take a look into their own family affairs. With all these you can tell a couple which are their strong points and on which areas they’ll have to work harder to get along well. No perfect couple exists, but there are couples willing to build strong and solid relationships, with a future ahead.

For a sinastry to be useful you must keep an open mind, knowing that, both you and your couple are human beings with different needs. By analyzing the sinastry chart you can find out things you didn’t know, or choose not to know, not only regarding your couple but also you. Are you brave enough to look at your real self? To work on your own development while supporting your couple? If the sinastry shows too many differences, will you be able to re-evaluate the relationship?

Besides, astrology can also help you to choose the best date for your marriage, thinking how it will be developing in the future.

All of these doesn’t mean there won’t be problems or difficult situations, it just means that you will have at hand the necessary tools to solve them and go on. The best thing for a couple is that both of them develop at the same rate and have joint objectives. That they become co-creators of their lives. If one of them starts walking while the other stays still, sooner or later problems will arise, and goodbyes. So what better way of starting than by taking a look, together, to their sinastry chart.

Neptune in Pisces and Venus in Aries

Neptune in Pisces.

Neptune entered Pisces in early April. What does it mean? For a start, Neptune is the lord of the sign (with the help of Jupiter), this is his house, his kingdom. The kingdom of Pisces is found in the deep waters representing the cosmos, the spiritual world, the high ideals, dreams and utopias, imagination, music, poetry, mysticism, sacrifice. A world where daily life and reality are left behind.

This sounds beautiful, to think of universal fraternity, to get away from the material world to step into the spiritual world, becoming one with the cosmos. Yes, it sounds nice, but it might lead us into a trap. Neptune is also related with cheating, anesthetics, drugs, alcoholism, fog, nightmares, everything that is hidden in the deepest places, like petroleum. An excess of Neptunian energies can lead us away from reality, we might start seeing things in an delusive way. We might feel overwhelmed by reality and try to escape from it by using drugs or daydreaming while we neglect our real life.

The last time Neptune was in Pisces was between 1847 and 1861. Those were the years when Marx developed his theories, people like Edison, Graham Bell, Tesla, Bram Stoker, Paul Gauguin, and Rimbaud were born. Wagner created the opera Lohengin. The pre-raphaelites developed their artistic movement. The First Universal Exposition, in London, opened. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written, and some countries abolished slavery.

Marx and Engels tried to create a better life for workers; inventors who later on would change the world thanks to their imagination were born. The world of poetry is touched by drugs  in the case of writers like Baudelaire and Rimbaud; Gauguin trying to escape from European society in search for an ideal paradise, in Polynesia; the artistic movement of pre-Raphaelites, recreating a ancient world of legends, heroes, and maidens, as so did Wagner. In Mexico, in 1847, we suffered the North American Intervention war and we can find an example of heroism and sacrifice for an ideal in the Niños Héroes (the heroic boys). In 1861, with Neptune leaving Pisces idealism and entering the warrior sign of Aries, the Civil War started in USA.

Yes, Neptune in Pisces can help us to be better, to fight for ideals that are not only ours, but of humanity, but you’ve got to stay alert so as not to fall into self delusion, or be fooled by supposed messiahs or utopian dreams that lead nowhere. Fog is not only a natural phenomena that forbids us from seeing the path and the objects, there’s also a mental fog that confuses and leads us away from the real objectives. When we are down deep we can find treasures, but there’s also darkness that might trap us.

With Neptune in Pisces the use of drugs and alcohol can rise.  Anesthetics can have a stronger effect and our dreams and nightmares become more vivid. Our dream cycle can be affected, we might need to oversleep or, on the contrary, suffer from insomnia. With Neptune in Pisces we can expect good things for movies, theatre, music, poetry. Events related with petroleum. We can expect the ideals of freedom that have been generating the latest revolutionary movements in the world to go on. We can expect spiritual changes, a rise in mysticism, people reaching for disciplines like yoga, and a rise in intuition, telepathy, and other psychic powers.

Venus in Aries.

Venus just left Pisces to enter Aries, it left behind the world of love dreams, of ideals, to enter a war zone. It left it’s sign of exaltation to enter in detriment. Venus, the planet of spiritual love, art, marriage, refinement is in a sign that represents, apparently, the opposing things, a warrior sign, not refined, but wanderer, adventurer, at the beginning of its development, where “I” is more important than “Us”. Venus is lord of Taurus and Libra, that is the next and the opposing signs to Aries. What can we say from this? Many things.

Let’s go, for a moment, to mythology, Venus is the roman version of the Greek Aphrodite, with the same attributes of beauty and love. Aphrodite was born from the ocean foam (and Venus has just left the oceans of Pisces), she wasn’t born from the gods, but was accepted as one in the Olympus. There, she became the wife of Hephaestus or Vulcan, the blacksmith god, ugly and crippled, but she had a love adventure with Ares (Mars), the war god. They felt attracted to each other, and that caused them problems with Hephaestus, who set a trap for them and exhibited them to the rest of the gods. In ancient times, part of the Aphrodite cult included the sacred prostitution of her priestesses, an aspect that many times is forgotten.

From here we can tell that in all truth Venus is not repelled from Aries, ruled by Mars, but that a part of her is attracted by him, by that “otherness” that seems to be the opposite of what she is looking for. Why? Because the truth is that Aries and Libra are not opposing but complementary signs, they complete each other in equilibrium.

Mars in Aries focuses in “I”, it’s the beginning of a path of evolution that, through the twelve signs of the zodiac, ends in the moment when the individual I melts with the universe, the “We Are One” of Pisces. But the second step of this evolution is found through Venus in Taurus. There he discovers that he’s not the only one, that the world does not turns around him and that there’s a partner waiting for him. Although in this moment they are still “You and Me”, they go on, evolving, until they reach Libra, where they become “Us”.

Venus in Aries becomes passionate, it forgets the social limits from Libra. It is reminded of the importance of “I”, because, sometimes, the excess of “Us” leads to situations where it might loose it’s identity o forget it’s own needs, objectives and wishes while trying to avoid harming the entity called “Us”.

With Venus in Aries, art can find great impulse, new and aggressive movements might appear (not violent ones, but strong, breaking the established ones). Sexuality can become more open, strong, intense, even a little crazy and unexpected, since Venus is in conjunction with Uranus and Lilith and in square with Pluto (although we mustn’t forget that Saturn is in Libra, talking about responsibility and stability in marriage).

So, even if Venus looks to be weak in Aries, the truth is that it’s effects will be really interesting by the aspects it has with other planets. Let’s see what comes out from art, sex and love, and how war and sports are affected by Venus.

By the way, just a curiosity, but this is a good time for candies covered with chili powder.

We are in an opening era, esoteric knowledge is out for everyone after being hidden for centuries. This is good, marvelous, but should be handled responsibly. Because it’s not about grabbing everything or following the first one that comes your way; as always, there are still charlatans and people trying to get rich with your money.

You’ve got to use your own criteria, analize what is being offered to you, if possible, compare and get more information. It’s just like going to the doctor, if he offers you a difficult or expensive solution to your problems you’d surely look for a second opinion. In this case it’s the same. Astrology, energetic healing, yoga, feng shui, etc. They can be wonderful tools and help you to solve problems, and they are there, at hand’s reach for everyone.

We’re in a time where everything is fast, beautiful and cheap, user accesible, “fast food”, “consumer friendly”, you solve everything with a clik, you solve everything reading some book. We have “mac-hamburgers”, “”mac-astrology”” and “”mac-feng shui””, all ready to take, wrapped in pink paper. Isn’t this civilization’s climax? You don’t need to leave your house, with a clik they are at your front door or on your computer/smart phone’s screen.

What would an ancient initiate would say? The esoteric road wasn’t easy, it implied effort, time, difficulties, obedience. But all this had a an end, the student who reached the end of the road had trained his will, his mind, his ego. His body, mind and feelings were in balance. He knew, felt, understood, was humble when faced with the inmensity of the cosmos and was responsible for his deeds. Even more, there wasn’t a market pushing him with its wild rules for selling and buying. And don’t misunderstand me, I’m not against earning your life through esoterism, that’s what I do, but I’m against the ones that take advantage of people without any real knowledge, just looking for money.

So, which criteria should you follow to walk the paths of the occult?

In ancient times, knowledge was transmited from the teacher’s mouth to the pupil’s ear. When they began writing it down, they intentionally introduced mistakes, so that not everyone would be able to understand; you still needed a teacher to guide you. Books on magic, astrology, alchemy, with imperceptible errors to the untrained student or written in a symbolic language difficult to descipher. This kind of books are still on print, with their mistakes, however, new occultism writers are handing out the same information for their readers in a clear way. If you are just curious, reading a book might be enough, but if your intention is to become a practitioner it’s still important to have a guide, a teacher who has already walk the path you intend to follow.

Astrology has many forms, from the esoteric to the practical astrology that many psychologists, attracted by the beauty of this tool that grants access to the human psique, practice. We have occidental and vedic astrology; chinese, aztecs, mayas and many more had their own techniques to cast horoscopes, even though they didn’t use the planets for it. And then we have the daily paper astrology, “”mac-astrology””. Does it work? As a guide, just that; to create these little predictions an astrologer takes the general aspects of a sign for the given day or week. But the general aspects are going to affect everybody in a different way, taking into account their personal ascendants. As I said, they are just guides, supposing they were written by an astrologer and not by somebody getting payed to invent them. Nothing can replace a good natal chart calculated and interpreted by someone who really knows.

Feng Shui: the key to solve your life while you decorate your house, isn’t it? Well, traditional chinese feng shui is based on an astrological analysis of the client. They won’t give any advice without knowing the elements that conform their client. Is he water? Fire? What’s best for him? There’s another system, of the 9 stars, based on the anual configuration of these to counsel people on cures to minimize the negative and boost the positive.

And there’s also “”mac-feng shui””. Personally I think this has become a kind of mixed salad where you can throw everything you want to give it flavor, at least in my country (Mexico). Let’s say it’s a do-it-yourself feng shui: here’s your colured map, this is your home’s door and that’s it. Ok, maybe it’s not that bad until now, problems start when you mix elements from other systems with feng shui.

I’d like to open a parenthesis here, to talk about systems and symbols for a moment. It won’t take long, I promise. Every system has its own elements and symbols and works only with them. It’s like a car from a specific brand, each has it’s own motor and components specifically designed for it. If I put a piece from a different brand in my car, I’d have trouble making it work, unless it’s got the same specifications. It’s the same for any system.

A symbol is an image, a concept that works at a subconscious level. My rational mind could try to analyze it, but it’s not destined for it. Symbols are universal, but they are not limited to a meaning or system. Take for example a five-pointed star: in a cabalistic system I can relate it with Mars, in a magic system I can relate it with the 5 elements (water, air, earth, fire, and ether) and magic itself, but it is also the symbol of Wicca religion and, for a little child, a golden or silver star in my forehead means he did something right and got a reward. Besides, a five-pointed star is a conventional way of representing any star in the sky.

Right, back with feng shui as a means of transforming energy with elements, symbolic or not. Let’s try a practical example, the corner of love. They recommend to place a couple of “anything” in that corner. Traditionally, a couple of mandarin ducks, which are sometimes changed for a couple of hummingbirds in Mexico. This adjusment works on a symbolic level for Mexico. Why? Because mandarin ducks might not tell us anything, but, traditionally, we associate the hummingbird with love; a hummingbird makes a great amulet for love. But I doubt if this adjustment would work in an european country where they don’t even have hummingbirds.

Now, there are other changes that leave me thinking, does the person that recommended it knew what he was doing? The other day I heard a lady asking for a Tetragrammaton as part of a feng shui remedy for her house, she was to put it on the wall above her bed as protection. And, on top of that, she was to be careful that the cup was standing heads up, if the cup were heads down she might lose her money. A tetragrammaton for feng shui? This is a cabalistic symbol corresponding to the Mars sephira because it’s, basically, a pentagram that owes its name to the fact that it contains the 4 letters of the sacred name Yave, but its symbolism is much wider. And the cup has nothing to do with money, it represents the element of water: emotions and feelings.

I think I have talked for too long now, but the topic stands for more. I’ll leave it open for another entry, meanwhile I’d like to know what you think, if you have questions or personal anecdotes, feel free to share them.
